Ukiyoe 1840 Kuniyoshi Book of Customs Woodblock Print
This ukiyo-e print by the famous Japanese artist Kuniyoshi measures approx. 4 3/8" x 6 1/2". It is in excellent condition and has been mounted to a 9 1/4" x 13" card. From his Book of Customs, this item features outstanding content and color.
Kuniyoshi Utagawa was born in Edo (Tokyo) in 1797. At the age of 14, he joined the famous Art School of Utagawa Toyokuni. His master gave him the name Kuniyoshi.
After leaving school he struggled until his breakthrough in 1827. His series "The 108 Heroes of the Suikoden" was a commercial success. He produced many Warrior and Hero prints before turng to other subjects. These included ghost stories, landscapes, beautiful women, comic prints, actors and eventually nature.
Kuniyoshi loved cats. Often he would insert them into his prints. Today his cat prints are highly sought.
