1888 The Printers' International Specimen Exchange IX
This 1888 edition of The Printers International Specimen Exchange Volume IX contains some of the most beautiful and prolific works of art produced by printers from around the world in 1887. This edition is Extremely Rare, complete, and in good condition. The binding remains very tight, there are some signs of moisture damage, there is considerable dirt on the cover and edges as well as bent corners, and the page ends show discoloration and some roughness. Inside the quality and integrity of the prints remains extremely fine. This volume measures approximately 9 ¾" x 12" and the minimum requirement for artwork inclusion was 11 ¼" x 8 ¾" . Each was produced on high quality paper or card stock. Featured within are amazing examples of high quality advertising, calendars, prints and letterheads from around the world. All are original specimens and were assembled by the Printers’ International Specimen Exchange with a total of less than 400 copies produced (many left unbound as there was a separate charge of 6/6 per volume). Having been produced in London by the Office of "The British Printer," 2a Gresham Press Buildings, Little Bridge Street, E.C., 1888. Inside the front cover there is a sticker (partially Removed) that reads, " Presented to the St. Bride Foundation Library by Albert Charles James (member of The Institute of Printers) Broad Quay, Bristol, November 1918."
The Editor of "The British Printer", which includes the following excerpts, wrote the introduction to this edition.
"Any misgivings that may have been entertained as to the future prospects of The Printers’ International Specimen Exchange are effectually set at rest by the number and quality of the contents of the Ninth Volume, now completed."
" The majority of British Printers are rapidly adopting the fresh and striking American ideas of design and display, with enough of the more formal but undeniably correct and artistic German element to constitute a style of their own, with distinct leaning towards the former in its quieter and less elaborate aspects. Our transatlantic cousins have noticed this,"

Inside the front cover there was a sticker that was removed and tore through the cover board top paper.
The Editor of "The British Printer", which includes the following excerpts, wrote the introduction to this edition.
"Having cleared up this little matter, we now come to the volume before us – that for 1893, and the fourteenth in the series. In the first place we note that the quality of the specimens, both as to design and colour, as well as perfection of workmanship, is thoroughly well up to the standard of the day, and it will be somewhat difficult for even the most critical to find half-a-dozen that could be objected to on account of indifferent execution."
" The last volume was an exceptionally good one in every way; the one before us is, in some respects, even better, though in some ways it does not come up to what we expected and asked for in the introduction to the last volume. For one reason, the great depression of trade during the last year has placed either on short time or wholly unemployed, many journeymen who had been in the habit of contributing, and this has made a difference of seventy or eighty contributors to this series."

"Amongst the new subscribers, Spain puts in an appearance with five excellent specimens, France and Russia have increased to three each, while New Zealand and Ceylon are represented for the first time. America and Australia remain stationary.
There are in the tenth volume 406 specimens, 72 from abroad and 334 contributed by the craft in the United Kingdom. Scotland is waking up and comes to the front with 35 contributions, nearly all of a very high order of merit. We hope to see this improvement continue. The Emerald Isle contributes five, and the ‘gallant little Wales’ four, England being responsible for the big majority of 290."

"The present volume marks a new era in the history of the Printers’ International Specimen Exchange. Since the last volume was issued three American Exchanges have ceased to exist, the French Exchange is reduced simply to a competition between half a dozen of the best workmen of the republic; but the German Exchange, which made a capital beginning, advances with the strength that was expected from such a nation of fine printers."
" The call for improvement in quality made in our announcement one year ago, has been well responded to, and the result is a collection – we are speaking now of the work of British printers only – which is highly credible as shewing that they are doing artistic work equal to any produced in any part of the world, and as bearing ample evidence of the growth of a distinct style of typographic design and display that is neither American or German, but embraces the best points of both – the freshness and originality of the first and the chaste colouring, and correct taste of the latter."

The introduction to this edition was written by the Editor of The Paper And Printing Trades Journal, which includes the following excerpts.
"The suggestion made a year ago that contributors should signalize the production of the seventh series by making a collective effort to place it on a higher level of excellence than heretofore, has borne good fruit. The current volume, both artistically and technically, is distinctly worthy of the occasion, and has indeed exceeded our most sanguine expectations. Sebastian Cabot, 1869
The Remakable Life, Adventures and Discoveries of Sebastian Cabot of Bristol, The Founder of Great Britain's Maritime Power, Discoverer of America and its First Colonizer By J.F. Nicholls was published in 1869 by Sampson Low, Son and Marston, London. It measures 6" x 8" x 3/4" and is in excellent condition. Featured inside the leaf is an original lithograph of Sebastian Cabot engraved by S. Rawle, from the original in the possession of Charles Jos. Harford, Esquire. Creme colored pages are crisp and clean. Binding is tight. There is a split inside the cover (pictured below). There is moderate shelf wear and the corners are bumped. Additional pictures upon request. The book has red leather boards with gold guilt. This very interesting book suggests that Cabot was the true discoverer of America. Pretty radical idea for the mid 19th Century. Overall a very unique rare book.
